To ring out the old year, I sewed a PJ set. This type of clothing sums up 2020 for some of us, as it doubles as work-from-home attire for us non-essential desk jockeys!
The main fabric is an adorable vintage-style cartoon print on cotton lycra jersey from Funkalicious Fabrics, with contrasting black rib-knit cuffs and neckband.
The pattern is vintage Simplicity 9354 from the 80s. The model’s pose was pretty great, so I attempted to duplicate it.
The pattern was easy to follow. I shortened the top hem by about 4 inches and lowered the elastic waistband of the pants by an inch (I am 5’4″). I also serged and topstitched the neckband and cuffs. The neckband lies nice and flat.
Finally, here’s a look at one of my custom garment tags. I ordered them earlier this year from Etsy shop wovenlabelZ. So much fun!
SO NICE!! I just looked at pjs pattern to make for the great grandson. Wasn’t sure about the knit trim….NOW I am inspired.
Thanks, Susan! PJs for your grandson sounds like a fun project! In case it helps, this is my process for attaching the rib knit trim pieces:
1. Sew the trim piece into a tube, fold in half and press
2. Sew the folded trim piece to the right side of the garment, all 3 raw edges together, with a zigzag stitch on regular sewing machine
3. Serge off most of the seam allowance, close to but not touching the zigzag seam — to me this adds extra strength and stability for these stretchy seams
4. Press the seam allowances towards the garment and topstitch
These pajamas look so comfy, and that fabric is amazing! It reminds me of the “Babes in the Wood” episode of _Over the Garden Wall_ which is probably my favorite animated show ever.
Thank you, they are super comfy! 😁 I haven’t seen _Over the Garden Wall_, but it looks so cute and fun! I will have to check it out.
