Easter Sunday Best

For Easter Jim and I decided to go out to eat at a Greek restaurant, and the weather looked promising, so I had an excuse to make something out of a very spring-y floral rib knit I fell in love with from the online store Stylish Fabric.

I knew I want a fitted midi dress with a front sweetheart tie detail, so I began sketching some ideas.

Once I settled on 80s-inspired puff sleeves, I launched right in even though I wasn’t quite sure about the skirt. Ultimately I decide to make the top and skirt separately as one of my signature 2-piece dress sets, so I could wear them either together or with other things. For example, the top will pair great with light-wash denim! And the skirt can go with a camisole or sweater. Here’s a flat lay of the top showing the front ties, princess seams, and puff sleeves.

At Jim’s suggestion, I settled on a V neckline which meets the knot in the front ties. The neckline is finished with a strip of knit. I hand-tacked the edges of the knit strip to the inside of the top.

And here are the 3 patterns I cobbled together to achieve this look:

For the skirt, I finally decided to try McCall’s 6281 and separate the front into 2 pieces to allow for a high slit. Here’s a view of the inside of the skirt, showing the folded casing for elastic and the partial lining (using stretchy swimsuit lining fabric that matches my skin tone).

Last of all I made a matching mask to wear to the restaurant, as shown in the top photo. Here are the front and back view of the finished 2-piece dress.

Happy Easter, and happy spring!
